Short Description:
This paper presents a theoretical model of sustainable tourism, designed to balance the benefits between two key stakeholder groups: tourists and local communities. The model assumes that tourism development must not exceed acceptable levels of environmental and sociocultural degradation. Using a mathematical function, the model graphically illustrates conditions of sustainability and unsustainability through algebraic notation. Although a simplification of empirical reality, it considers key factors influencing tourism sustainability. The model underwent empirical verification through pilot studies in Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, Poland’s Western Pomerania, and Cyprus between 2013 and 2014. Findings suggest that the model serves as an effective tool for assessing tourism sustainability across diverse destinations. Given the theoretical gaps and lack of consensus in the literature, this model offers a structured approach to understanding sustainable tourism. The paper is primarily conceptual but includes case studies supporting its empirical application.
