Short Description:
The mountain village of Kalopanayiotis, nestled in the Troodos region of Cyprus, is a nationally recognised example of how rural revitalisation can be achieved through Sustainable Cultural tourism. Once facing economic and population decline, the village has been transformed into a thriving destination through a long-term, community-led effort centred on heritage preservation, wellness and local entrepreneurship.

Traditional homes were restored and converted into boutique accommodations, spas, and cultural sites, while the village’s religious landmarks and natural landscapes were carefully integrated into the visitor experience. The project prioritised local ownership, maintaining control over development while creating jobs and income opportunities for residents.

Kalopanayiotis has received multiple recognitions, including the EDEN Award, its designation as one of UN Tourism’s Best Tourism Villages (2024) and inclusion in the Cyprus Colourful Villages initiative. It stands as a scalable model for how rural communities can grow sustainably, stay authentic and thrive without relying on mass tourism.
