Short Description:
The Vevčani Lazarki report presents a best-practice case of cultural revival and community-led heritage safeguarding in the village of Vevčani, North Macedonia. Revived in 2022 after six decades of dormancy, this springtime ritual centered around Lazarus Saturday re-engages young women in traditional songs, dress, and blessings, highlighting gender-inclusive participation, intergenerational knowledge transfer, and sustainable tourism. The report outlines the ritual’s cultural, economic, social, and environmental impact, its role in community identity, and its replicability as a model for other rural areas aiming to preserve intangible cultural heritage through authentic, community-based celebration.
